While the heat outside is white, burning this green
land dry and pale, I sit in darkness, eat green shoots,
drink distilled water and inhale purified air.
Dogs, cats and rabbits squashed as we drive passed, in
air-conditioned splendour.

Is my only goal in life to get old, have my picture
in the paper telling other fools, who dream of
perpetuity, to eat greens and not smoke now that
we have lost our faith and longevity is the only
thing to look forward to?

Car bombs explode, charred body, torn limbs
caught on camera to fill a slot on the evening
news. Close up now let's see the tears of grief
the human-interest story. I sit in darkness and
wonder about my goal in life.
