Are those tears mine

I remember them

when plodding my way to school

with a satchel of emptiness

slung across my shoulder;

the box of crayons did nothing

to relieve the searing, wide-eyed loneliness

Today, in that Bangladeshi boy’s face

I see a quiet reflection, like a cracked mirror

Will the trembling earth weep with me

As dusk descends on the world ?

Let the earth weep, treaded bare

Let the flowers droop their heads in sorrowful shame

Let all the poems descend from the heavens

Tumbling;

To impede nature’s wrath.
