A cacophony of sound throbs through the park,

invading my lunch hour,

as the noise of planes soaring across the skyline,

mingles with the constant din of cars.

Sycamore trees surround the artificial lake,

and flop over the water's edge,

their branches battering against the cement path.

People throw bread into the lake

and ducks compete with water hens,

for a few crusts floating on the dark surface.

I watch as children delight in the movements

of young ducks as they follow the female,

until they are ready to fend for themselves,

along with other fowl in Herbert Park.
