NAPA Exhibition Review - 1997
![]()

"Opening Day; RBSA Gallery Exhibition, Birmingham"
It was both an honour and a pleasure to judge and open the 1997 exhibition, held at the RBSA gallery in Birmingham.
The immediate impression was of variety, artistic strength and professional presentation. Closer inspection revealed many extremely accomplished works in a breadth of style and techniques. These ranged from the superbly painted, small jewel-like, highly realist works (especially those from American members) through to loosely painted expressive or impressionist landscapes. Of particular note were a number of large paintings, some of a semi abstract nature, and some very fine images of urban facades.
A surprise to me was the spectrum of techniques employed by members, highlighting the flexibility and amazing versatility of acrylics. Works were on show which could easily have been mistaken for watercolours, such was their translucency, while others employing a more robust, impasto technique, presented the more vigorous side of the medium. Many paintings exhibited the beautiful, even finish, which is possible with acrylic paint. Members are to be congratulated on the ambition shown in so much of the work on display.
Finally a word about presentation. Almost without exception, framing and mounting was of a very high order. Long gone are the days of the 'jumble sale' frame. Works are immeasurably enhanced by sensitive framing, and of course this increases the chances of selling.
Congratulations to all involved. Alwyn Crawshaw and I found that as joint judges we were in total accord, but regretted that the thirteen or so awards at our disposal were insufficient to reward the many works, which impressed us.
