NAPA EXHIBITION 2003

brush

St. Ives

The Mariners Gallery

NAPA's 2003 International Exhibition was held at:
The Mariners Gallery,
Norway Square,
St Ives,
Cornwall,
United Kingdom.

It ran from 8th to 21st November 2003.

Once again NAPA staged an exhibition of members works in the Mariners Gallery, as close to the sea as one can get, so near that you can hear the waves in the harbour from the gallery door. This was the second time NAPA had appeared in St. Ives and the repeated project proved a success. Visitors in 2002 were prepared to seek us out once again and visitor figures and sales were at record levels. The venue also attracted new artist members, some from the town itself.

As in the previous exhibition, David Hillhouse travelled down from Merseyside, about 350 miles, which in England is considered a long journey. In the United States it would pale into insignificance. New member Paul Geraghty, who lives in St. Ives, was able to lend a helping hand and together work was received during the few days before the exhibition, and was ready for the preview on Saturday afternoon of 9th November.

Over 30 artists contributed work that had been chosen in the normal way from submitted images several months beforehand. Paintings were delivered to the gallery from all over the United Kingdom as well as Brazil, Israel and the United States. Artists living within a reasonable distance of St. Ives and those making a short holiday of it were able to deliver in person and to attend the preview.

NAPA was very pleased to include work from two artists from the United States, Linda Gunn (US Director) and Shirley Levine.

Charles Baile de Laperriere who is the editor of ‘Who’s Who in Art’ opened the exhibition. Published by Hilmarton Manor Press in Wiltshire, England since 1927, this contains biographies of leading figures in British art including artists, designers, craftsmen, critics, writers, teachers and curators. Charles is presently preparing the 31st edition, which is scheduled for publication early in 2004 and will contain over 3,500 entries including those NAPA members who were exhibiting in St. Ives on this occasion. Ken Hodgson introduced NAPA’s guest and Charles began by presenting prizes from sponsors. He then declared the exhibition open.

Visiting the various galleries in St. Ives, visitors become almost overwhelmed by the numerous paintings of beaches and boats and harbours – but what would you expect in St. Ives.

It is remarkable how many visitors enter the NAPA exhibition note what a change it is from the norm. It is the huge variety in a NAPA exhibition that makes them attractive to so many people. Everyone of the artists finds inspiration in different subject matter and each finds their own solution by their individual use of acrylics.

Representatives from the St. Ives Society of Artists had been asked to select paintings for awards. STISA’s curator Judy Joel had kindly agreed to this and those artists present were able to receive their awards in person.
