Personal Statement:

Even though the paintings shown here are based upon real locations, they should not be seen merely as an attempt to 'illustrate a view' or 'make a picture' of the original scene. The beginning for each work was a drawing or colour sketch executed en pleine air. This however, is only a starting point, and when working on each painting back at the studio, I am attempting to achieve something quite different. For the painting to 'work', it must 'paint itself', how this is achieved is part of the mystery of making a painting that may be considered as a work of art.
